Raw Food and Cravings

One of the hardest parts so far to eating raw foods for me has been the cravings.

It is very odd since I am craving food I have not eaten in years and really have no interest in eating.

About 30 days ago, I started trying raw with juicing 6 times a week to see if that would help with cravings for cooked food. It has helped tremendously. Almost everyday I have had green apple kale juice. I drink about 16 ounces of juice per day right now. I am looking to double that in the coming month.

Mostly what I want that is not raw is fries. It is odd because I used to eat fries more often about 8 to 10 years ago, but for the past few years I haven’t eaten fries much at all. I have been more into Mexican food and Japanese food then American food. Though I still enjoyed the occasional veggie burger and fries on occasion. But, fries was a staple when I was growing up.

Also, when I give in and eat fries, I suddenly have harsh cravings for all sorts of cooked foods that I was not cravings before eating friends. Cravings for pizza, Mac and cheese, and mashed potatoes and gravy. One day for fun I made a list. Most of the stuff on it, I would not eat. Oddly, bread and pasta did not make the list.

The big trick is to juice before I am heavily feeling the cravings. Juicing does not really eliminate the cravings but knock them down hard on the severity scale. If a craving on the 10 scale is where I would end up giving in, my cravings before juicing were at 9.6.

When I drink juice almost every day, the cravings go down to about a 3 or a 4. Not perfect, but completely manageable for me. Sometimes, I notice I am cravings something and it really just means I am hungry and hadn’t realized it.

I am going to play around with more juices and see if adding more greens and drinking more juice helps cut the number even further.

I am getting into more juices and am looking into getting a juicer instead of doing it in my vitamix and running it through a nut milk bag. Any juicer suggestions? I would love to get a Norwalk Juicer, but I don’t want to get that kinda of artillery for my first juicer before I know if I am going to keep this up long term. So I am going towards the Hurom slow juicer. I watched a ton of videos on it and it seems great. If you are interested, here are some of the videos I watched.

Also, to help support my juicing needs, I found this awesome website that is about to launch regarding organic farming. Basically, you pay someone to grow food for you and you get to pick what you grow. They pick it and ship it to you.  If you have extras, you can sell it on their store. They also guarantee the crops and it is 100 percent organic. They also have a web cam up over the garden plot you lease so you can watch it. Right now, they are only doing preregistrations since they have not actually launched yet, but the idea of much cheaper organic food that is much fresher is very appealing to me.

Hey Adrienne, it sounds like maybe your body is not getting enough fat at the moment. Maybe try adding in more nuts (macadamia, walnuts, almonds especially) and avocado, and see if your cravings go away? When I was eating all raw, I found that having avocado on flax “bread” sandwiches (I use Ani Phyo’s Black Sesame Bread recipe, http://www.rawfreedomcommunity.info/forum/showthread.php?t=847) killed off my cooked-food cravings. Although more greens definitely help with cravings, too — are you drinking green smoothies?

Good luck, and let us know how your experiments go!

Thanks Fiona for the ideas and the link and thanks for all the support you have shown :)
I will check that out. I typically eat 1 avocado and occasionally 2 a day. I am not a huge nut eater but do manage to eat some every week. and i am so going to try your idea of avocado on flax bread sandwiches :)

I am drinking green smoothies. I have one every morning for breakfast. I usually but spinach and vitamineral green in them with banana and frozen strawberry.
