Raw Food Trial: Day 5

I slept 6.75 hours last night. i woke up at 6:45 this morning.  A little groggy, but wide awake.  I stayed in bed and listened to a podcast for about 30 minutes while i pawed thru some cook books (raw of course).
I slept well, but i am still not remembering my dreams.  Weird.
I felt pretty good the rest of the day.  My cold seems be getting a little better.  I still feel under the weather with lots of couching but it was considerably less then yesterday and the days before.

I lost another pound since yesterday, putting the total pounds lost at 7.0.  That is pretty good for 5 days.  I dont know how much is fat or muscle or water.  But i do like watching the numbers go down.  When i am back to feeling a bit better, i will hit the gym and sports again.

I had no focus today.  None.  Writing this is difficult.  Writing for me is usually second nature, and today i took alot of time staring at this document thinking, why cant i just eat black beans and rice and watch tv?
Then suddenly i would get a surge of energy, but i did not want to be sitting here, i wanted to be doing something with food in my hands.  Today, i cracked 4 coconuts and made coconut milk and coconut ice cubs. I made chocolate, 5 huge smoothies, 2 salad dressings, meals, and found myself doing extra work i did not have to do like cut strawberries.  It was fun and relaxing for a while, but i had alot of other things i wanted to do today.  At about 10:30, i gave in and let myself spend the day playing with my food.  This also progressed to taking videos of kitchen grape catching, dancing, and my sister shacking it on camera.  We had some good laughs.

Hunger for the last couple days sets in around 10.  I eat and i feel great until about 2.  Suddenly, i am really hungry, no warning, no build up, no signs.  I made a huge lunch (probably around 1000 calories), and veg for about 60 minutes to eat that much food.  Then i am good again.  Tonight, i didnt really get hungry for dinner.  I got a little snack hungry and had some grapes and a banana.
(For those of you who dont have a strongish stomach, you may wish to skip the rest of this section.) The last couple days, i seem to get hungry right after going to the bathroom.

Today, i got MSM in the mail.  It is popular with many raw foodist.  I gave everyone one pill today and you see the pill in the first picture next to the water cups.  To me, it smells awful.  Lindsay liked it this morning saying it smelled like onion dip made with sour cream.  However tonight, she says the smell changed and it smells nasty now.
I also got my nut milk bag, which means tomorrow, we get to have juice!

I cracked open 4 coconuts today.  So far, it turns out, i dont like coconuts, even if they are young ones.  For me they are too sweet.  Lindsay commented when she smelled the coconut, that it did not smell like coconut, at least not the sent they pass off in shampoo and hand lotions as such.
I put a little in a smoothie, i like that way (who am i kidding, i could not even taste it :) ).

Dry hands

Today, i kept count, in the kitchen i washed my hands 29 times.  I did wear gloves for part of the day as well so that cut down on a number of hand washing events.  This does not include any other times my hands got wet (shower, bathroom, etc).  No wonder my hands are dry.

Today for breakfast, i tried making everyone larger smoothies.

Mom’s is on the left.  It is tropical pasley.

Lindsay’s is in the middle.  She wanted tropical blueberry (berries with an orange and spinach) .

Mine is on the right. Strawberry, banana, maca, spinach.

Lunch, Lindsay helped me in the kitchen and we made cucumber goodness.  She know thinks that cucumbers are contributing to her stomach issues, so she is going to avoid them for a couple days and see.

I snacked on some red grapes later in the day.  And i started playing with chocolate making supplies.

For dinner, i had a banana with some of the chocolate drizzled on it and stuck in the freezer for a few minutes.  It was yummy. This picture is not of my actual plate.  This is the one i made for mom.  It has 2 bananas, and a few strawberries.

I also got some goji berries and inca berried.  So far, i really dont like them.  The gojis in particular are bitter.  I soaked some in water, and YUCK.  Just feeling them made me feel like i had put my hand into a water bowl of maggots.  Blah.

Goji berries on the left and incan on the right.  See what i mean about the Goji maggots?

Lindsay has written again for us.

Day 5

I find myself getting tired earlier, and I am still waking up groggy.  My focus was off most of the day.

I upped my calorie intake today to see if that helped me feel more full.  I think it helped a bit.  I also noticed today, while eating a cucumber, lettuce, and tomato salad with guacamole dressing, I feel yucky after eating cucumbers.  I’m going to keep an eye on that the next time I have cucumbers and see if that is there’s any consistency.  Adrienne made me my favourite smoothie this morning for breakfast.  It was tasty, but I couldn’t finish it.  I had the salad for lunch, and oranges for dinner.  However, I did snack quite a bit throughout the day, which is a usual tactic for me – raw food or not.  One thing I must mention is that Adrienne became a superhero in my world today, because she did something that I did not think could be done…she made raw vegan chocolate!!  It was perfect for dipping fruit in, yum.  There were also some dried berries that she got for us to try.  They needed to be soaked before we could eat them, but holy crap they were nasty.  And if you stuck your finger in the bowl of berries and water…it felt a lot like maggots (at least what I think maggots would feel like…I don’t exactly run around looking for maggoty places to stick my finger…wow, that just sounds bad, anyway…).

Tonight, I’m in a bit a pain.  I’ve got a nasty headache and my leg really hurts.  I do not know if these are because of raw-food or not.  I’ve had headaches before and the pain in my leg is something I’ve had before to (it’s a nasty ache that surfaces occasionally in different locations).  Also, I got a stomach ache today.  I know that this is not particularly ground breaking news, but I am mentioning it because, and perhaps I should have mentioned this sooner, my stomach is one of the things we are keeping track of.  I’ve had stomach issues for as long as I can remember, and we are all curious to see if eating only raw foods will have any affect on it.   I am still very itchy.  It’s the kind itch you get when you have a cut that is in the process of healing.

In terms of my mood, I have my ups and downs throughout the day.  I guess that that is to be expected.  Although, and this is a bit of a side note, Adrienne taking so many pictures of the food has led to her new camera being out quite a bit which has led to several sessions of sheer silliness between Adrienne and I.  When these happen, they definitely contribute to my being in great mood.

And now, for the daily joke:

One some air bases the Air Force is on one side of the field and civilian aircraft use the other side of the field, with the control tower in the middle.  One day the tower received a call from an aircraft asking, “What time is it?”

The tower responded, “Who is calling?”

The aircraft replied, “What difference does it make?”

The tower replied “It makes a lot of difference.  If it is an American Airlines Flight, it is 3 o’clock.  If it is an Air Force aircraft, it is 1500 hours.  If it is a Navy aircraft, it is 6 bells.  If it is an Army aircraft, the big hand is on the 12 and the little hand is on the 3.  If it is a Marine Corps aircraft, it’s Thursday afternoon.”

Semper Fi :)
