Lifetime Goals

Do you know what you want out of life? Do you know where you want to be in 10 years? 5 years? 50 years? Do you know what you want to accomplish?

I was working on goals I wanted to do this year back in early 2007. I then broke that up so I had goals that I could measure every month so I knew I was on track. But as I worked on this, it became apparent to me that I had goals that built on each other every year and some goals that looking back on them, I wonder what I was thinking.

I sat down one day to write a list of what I what I wanted to do before I die. This was hands down one of the best things I have ever tried to do. It showed me where I wanted to head in life, what I wanted to do, what I wanted to accomplish, and it was measurable.

Figuring out what you want

When I first started writing my list, it looked like a smattering of to-dos. Everything from hike in a certain place, raft a specific river, do a certain activity, or accomplish a specific task.

I just started writing. After about an hour I was out of ideas. I had over 100 things listed, but I knew there was a lot more. Ideas that I had stuck in the back of my mind that I wanted to do, but was not remembering like learning to kiteboard.

One of the best unexpected positives to come out of my list, was that I now have a place to put down whenever I saw something cool that I want to do, a place I want to hike, a place I want to visit, or something I want to learn. Its no longer stashed in memory where I worry I may forget it.

A couple days after I wrote my list, I found a bunch of items stored in my memory started coming back to me. It also reminded of me of all the stuff I have accomplished. I wrote these down too, and checked them off and put the best date I could remember with it. I am now contaminating starting an adventure journal where I put pictures and tales of how each of my goals came to be.

So to get your list started, you may find it helpful to ask yourself some of these questions.

Make a list

Create a list. Write down, organize, and keep track of what you want to do and when you accomplish them. Write down goals you once had that you accomplished already. Take the time to figure out where you want to go, so you can get there.
